As I have mentioned before stereo capture has been around a long time, and while it continues to be an interesting way to capture spatial photos, what if there is a new way? Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) were a big hit just a few years ago in presenting a new idea in spatial capture. “Gaussian Splatting” is a simpler idea with perhaps even better results. This technology requires a complete rethinking of the field of spatial capture. It may be that thinking in terms of texture filled polygons will soon be antiquated and computationally heavy renders may no longer be required, instead replaced with blurry points in space captured by simply walking through a scene with an iPhone.

Below is an example I took at the cemeteries in Colma. To capture it I recorded a video on my iPhone walking through the scene, then processed the video in PostShot. To view on Apple Vision Pro you will see a headset icon in the lower right if you have WebXR enabled in Safari. Click on the icon, allow the app to go full screen, and enjoy the view!
